Happy holiday, dear colleagues! Happy Victory Day!!!
On this day, we will remember the feat of the Soviet people during the siege of Leningrad.
The world's first underwater pipeline for pumping of petroleum products was laid in 1942 in the besieged Leningrad. The city was in dire need of fuel as well as food. The pipeline was built across Ladoga Lake in 43 days (from May 5th to June 16th). At that time, there were no similar projects either in the Soviet Union, or even in the world. In the pre-war period, the Moscow Еrust "Nefteprovodproekt" tested a two-kilometer collapsible pipeline – that was all the practical experience at that time.
Chief Engineer D. Shinberg was in charge of the project. Pipes were found at Izhora Plant (steel, diameter 101 mm). The plant was also heavily shelled, therefore the pipes for transportation were loaded only at night. Disguise during the construction of the pipeline was particularly careful not to attract attention, even the lanterns were not lit. The Germans never found out about this pipeline. From June 1942 to March 1943, more than 47 thousand tons of fuel were pumped to Leningrad. This way they broke the fuel blockade and provided oil products not only to the troops, but also to the city.
