On December 2, 2019, the delivery of Russian pipeline gas to China via the "Eastern" route of the main gas pipeline "Power of Siberia" has started. The event was attended by President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin, President of the People's Republic of China XI Jinping, Chairman of the Board of Gazprom Alexey Miller and Chairman of the Board of Directors of CNPC Wang Yilin.
Gas supply, according to the contract between Gazprom and CNPC, will be carried out for 30 years. Currently, gas to the" Power of Siberia " comes from the largest field in Yakutia - Chayandinsk Fields (gas reserves-1.2 trillion cubic meters). A new gas production center has been created on the basis of this field in the region: key facilities have been built, including integrated processing and pre-treatment facilities, a booster compressor station, accomodation facilities, and about 1,000 km of roads, including 25 bridges.
The project capacity of the field is 25 billion cubic meters of gas per year, and it is planned to reach this mark in 2024. The project of organizing gas supplies along the Eastern route is the largest investment project in the world gas industry. As part of its implementation, at the first stage, the Power of Siberia section was launched with a length of about 2.2 thousand km from the Chayandinsk field to Blagoveshchensk (the border with China).
At the end of 2022, the gas supply to the "Power of Siberia" will begin with another field – Kovyktinsky field (gas reserves – 2.7 trillion cubic meters), the largest in the East of Russia. On its basis, the Irkutsk gas production center is currently being formed. At the moment fields are being developed. From Kovyktinsk to Chayandinsk fields, a section of the Power of Siberia gas pipeline will be built with a length of about 800 km.
After the Power of Siberia main gas pipeline reaches its design capacity of 38 billion cubic meters of gas per year (planned for 2024), China will become the second largest consumer of Russian gas in the world after Germany (in 2018 Germany consumed 58.5 billion cubic meters of gas), overtaking Turkey (24 billion cubic meters) and Italy (22.8 billion cubic meters), which are currently second and third.
