JSC "Transneft - Druzhba" has started a pilot operation of an infrasound pipeline monitoring system (IPMS) with a leak detection function. The unique system of continuous remote monitoring of technical condition of oil pipelines was developed by scientists in Novosibirsk and has no analogues. It differs from leak detection systems in use by its multi-functionality, higher sensitivity, and accuracy in coordinates setting.
Due to the peculiarities of infrasound propagation, the IPMS is able to detect mechanical impacts on the pipe at long distances with an accuracy of up to 100m and detect even small leaks.  The new system performs flaw detection of the pipeline internal surface, registers the location of in-line devices, monitors valves and performs a number of other diagnostic functions. IPMS will operate as part of a pilot project.
Based on the results of the infrasound system operation, the potential of its further application at Transneft system facilities will be studied.
